Practice Suggestions for Learning How to Play Sixteenth Rests

These rhythms include the most complicated patterns that have been covered so far in the lessons of The Fundamentals of Rhythm. Practice them slowly and always count every quadruple subdivision of the beat.

The first four patterns in Part 1 of this lesson feature all of the possible combinations of three sixteenth notes with one sixteenth rest in common time.
The first six patterns in Part 2 of this lesson feature all of the possible combinations of two sixteenth notes and two sixteenth rests in common time.
The first four patterns in Part 3 of this lesson feature all of the possible combinations of one sixteenth rest and three sixteenth rests in common time.

Practice each of these introductory patterns frequently and with a quadruple subdividing metronome, and always count each subdivision. Doing so will help you recognize those patterns instantly and improve your sight reading ability and rhythm skills.

When you are comfortable playing the patterns with a quadruple subdivision metronome, try a duple subdivision metronome, and then a single clicking metronome. Always count every subdivision!
